Everything is black and silent. I am immersed in a sort of nebulousness around which I cannot quite wrap my mind, and, for the life of me, I am unable to reconcile the last moments I can remember, the ones wherein I was sitting out on the porch with the kids, with this new reality in which my arms and legs are fastened in place.. affixed to something. I am confused and disoriented. There is a sharp pain searing through my spine. Am I paralyzed? No. I try to free myself from whatever is binding me, but my efforts are futile and ultimately to no avail. Scrambled TMJ

Temporamandibular joint syndrome may be attributable to any number of things, including trauma to the teeth or jaw, arthritis, teeth grinding, stress/anxiety, POOR POSTURE, etc., any one or all of which may eventually give way to pain in the jaw, headaches, a clicking or locking when opening or closing the mouth, shoulder pain, and a number of other unfavorable symptoms. He comes into town “for a visit,” and I am abundantly aware of the never-works-out-ness of that notion, but, nevertheless, I arrange and rearrange my schedule accordingly so as to accommodate their (not) presence… as if I don’t know better. I am the brilliant creator of my own misery here. Of this, I am certain.
By late morning on what is supposed to be day two of “the visit” but has ultimately morphed into day one owing to one debacle or another on the day previous that found them arriving in the small hours of day one (previously meant to be day two. Are you following me? Imagine my vexation.), I’ve still received no word of their location or itinerary for the days ahead, so I elect to go about my morning as if they were not in town, doing laundry and fetching groceries and such, when finally he phones. The Process

I wake up at 3:15 in the morning and have coffee whilst brainstorming and jotting down ideas. I consider the musculoskeletal impairments, goals, and particular phase(s) associated with each of my clients over the next several days, which inevitably leads to planning and testing, and I subsequently bring some variation of that process to all of you. I’m making my way into Wal-Mart when a Girl Scout races over all the while shouting “Do you want to buy some Girl Scout cookies?! Do you want to buy some Girl Scout cookies?!” Of course I do, you calculating goblin. Typically, when I stumble upon a cookie-selling  crowd, irrespective of the shape of their intention, I make a mad dash for some semblance of refuge that is entirely out of their field of vision, as I am not above the likes of an unhealthy relationship with food (which is my cryptic way of saying I want to rob the Girl Scouts and eat all of their cookies all at once). Last night, however, as I was politely expressing my no-thank-yous, the little (insert expletive) all but tackles me and goes on to say “but it will help us go to camp.” Read more

We’re a little over a mile from home, sprinting almost frantically in an effort to maintain a great breadth between us and our pursuer, who, from this distance looks like a bear-shaped dinosaur dog that may be a well-intended and gentle giant, but we certainly don’t have any way of knowing, and I am entirely unwilling to slow down and find out, so we continue to hasten our way back home. Shoulder Impingement: The You-Broke-It-You-Fix-It Approach

Shoulder impingement is a dynamic condition that “occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become irritated and inflamed as they pass through the subacromial space, the passage beneath the acromion. This can result in pain, weakness, and loss of mobility around the shoulder.”

Shoulder pain is a commonly reported issue amid both athletes and the general population with reported incidences in the latter occurring in up to 21%. Read more


You truly are not what you eat. Let’s be honest; if we avoided every food for which there has been any evidence of adverse consequences, we would all starve.
Moreover, we have to be happy about what we are eating in order to be able to perpetuate any particular course over an entire lifetime. Labeling foods as “good” or “bad” and depriving ourselves of simple pleasures does not lend itself well to creating a lifestyle that can be mantained (that is not abjectly miserable) or to true emotional soundness. This is why I don’t advocate extremes in dietary changes. Read more

Your Feet Hate You

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of pain in the foot, particularly in the heel, and is attributable to a lack of adequate ankle dorsiflexion (the ability to lift the foot upwards), extended time on one’s feet, overpronation of the foot (flat feet), a57a93941516c1-1-imagend/or an elevated body mass index.

Let’s build a house without a foundation. I’m sure everything will be fine.


Irrespective of your primary goal, be it to enhance your running speed, maximize your strength, improve definition, or any number of other such desires, your ability to maintain your center of gravity is the foundation from which you can soar the furthest towards any ambition. No matter how fit or strong we believe that we are in any given moment, without a formidable foundation, we are inevitably selling ourselves short.
With several of my golfers, while they are phased through balance, strength, and power training over and over again, every one of them improved the distance of their drive without ever lifting a heavy weight. Stabilization is such a vital component of sports performance and ANY and EVERY sound training program.

“No Pain, No Gain?”

This outdated notion has absolutely no place in a sound training program. Your body, in an effort to avoid pain, will force the body to compensate with less-than-optimal posture and the wrong groups of muscles, ultimately leading to tissue overload, decreased neuromuscular efficiency, muscle imbalances, and often injury. Furthermore, while exercise can sometimes be uncomfortable, a workout that leaves a person sore for several days is potentially hazardous for your body and can exacerbate or create movement compensations that also place an individual at greater risk for injury. Pain in a workout is not a prerequisite or a requirement for improving strength or endurance or any other such relevant objective. On the contrary, that level of discomfort is the body’s way of indicating that something is terribly amiss. Read more
